Soul Care

What is Soul Care?

Trauma is the result of experiences that wound us both internally and externally and takes a long time to heal (Pss 22:14-15; 73:14, 26; Job 17:6-7; Lk 22:44). These experiences cause deep suffering that impacts all areas of our lives: our thoughts, relationships, bodies, work, and faith. A ministry of Soul Care provides nurture and care to accomplish the work of inner healing and restoration in people’s lives that is available through Jesus Christ, the wounded healer (Isa 53:3-5; Jn 10:10). This kind of ministry seeks to cultivate a safe environment where the wounded are seen, heard, understood, prayed for, and comforted (1 Thes 5:14). Soul Care Providers are conduits of God’s hope, grace, and healing to others. Often they enter the pain of others simply by listening and being present, creating a space for God to work (Job 2:11-13; Rom 12:15; Gal 6:2). God hears our cries and redeems our afflictions (Gen 50:20; Pss 34:17-22; 40:1-4; 103; Isa 45:3; Rom 8:28-29; Jas 1:2-4).

The great Soul Care passage is 2 Cor 1:3-5:

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.
